About this book

This book covers the fundamentals of sensor technologies as well as the recent research for the development of environmental, chemical and medical sensor technologies. Chapters include current research on microflow cytometry, microfluidic devices, colorimetric sensors, and the development of low-cost optical densitometric sensors and paper based analytical devices for environmental and biomedical applications. Special focus has been given to nanotechnology and nanostructures- their fabrication, uses and utility in different fields of research such as for the design of tools for medical diagnostics, therapeutics, as well as for detection and estimation of pollutant levels in water and air quality monitoring. This book is intended as a resource for researchers working in the field of sensor development across the world.

About the editors

Prof. Shantanu Bhattacharya* serves a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and also as Head of Design Program at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India. He has 60+ international journal publications in areas related to sensor systems, nanotechnology, nanomaterials, advanced functional materials etc.  and has received IEI young engineer award, ISSS young scientist award, NDRF design award, and is a fellow of IEI.

Prof. Avinash K. Agarwal*joined the IIT Kanpur in 2001. His areas of interest are IC engines, combustion, alternative fuels, conventional fuels, optical diagnostics, laser ignition, HCCI, emission and particulate control, and large-bore engines. He has published 230+ international journal and conference papers. Prof. Agarwal is a Fellow of the SAE (2012), ASME (2013), ISEES (2015) and INAE (2015). He has received several awards such as the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Engineering Sciences-2016; Rajib Goyal prize-2015; NASI-Reliance Industries Platinum Jubilee Award-2012; and INAE Silver Jubilee Young Engineer Award-2012.

Dr. Nripen Chanda is currently a Senior Scientist at the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur, India. He received his PhD degree from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and MS from University of Burdwan. He also served as a Postdoctoral fellow and a Research scientist at the University of Missouri, Columbia. His research interests include Micro-Nano Processing technologies, Systems and Devices, Lab-on-Chip, Nanosensors, Self cleaning patterned surfaces, Textured solar cell and Energy storage applications.

Prof. Ashok Pandey, FBRS, FRSB, FNASc, FIOBB, FISEES, FAMI, is Distinguished Scientist at CSIR-IITR, Lucknow. He was Chief Scientist & Head of Biotechnology Division at CSIR’s NIIST, Trivandrum. Prof. Pandey authored 1200 publications including 16 patents, 55 books, 132 book chapters, and 460 original research and review papers. Prof. Pandey received Life-Time Achievement Award from ISEES (2017); Fellow of Royal Society of Biology, UK (2016); Academician of European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Germany (2016); Thomson Scientific India Citation Laureate Award, USA (2008); Lupin Visiting Fellowship, UNESCO Professor; Raman Research Fellowship Award.

Dr. Ashis Kumar Sen received his PhD from the University of South Carolina, USA in 2007. Earlier, he received his ME from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and BE from the National Institute of Rourkela. Before joining IIT Madras he has served as a Microfluidics Engineer at Epigem Ltd, UK and subsequently as Research Associate and R&D Engineer at the University of Southampton. His research interests are in the areas of Microfluidics, Micro-scale transport phenomena and Lab-on-Chip development.
